How Does It Work?
There are many theories surfacing in the Western world today on how acupuncture actually works. Simply put, acupuncture causes a physiological response within the brain and organ systems to release the body's natural chemicals and hormones such as, serotonin and endorphins that can help restore homeostasis within the body.
Classical Chinese texts have been translated over the years that Acupuncture students study today. From a Chinese theory perspective, acupuncture points run along a meridian system that lies beneath the skin surface. Meridians are energy pathways carrying Qi (say Chee) that have an interrelationship with our organs and physical body. There is a meridian that corresponds to every organ in our body. Meridians are like rivers flowing throughout the body and when they are flowing with Qi and blood, the body is in homeostasis and is nourished. When a river(s) becomes blocked, the flow becomes backed up like a dam. This will cause an imbalance within our Qi, which may present physical and/or emotional symptoms. This is frequently experienced as stress, illness or pain.

Putting it all together, acupuncture works as a catalyst by making a physiological response within our organ systems to stimulate Qi; ultimately, restoring balance to promote healing and help maintain homeostasis. Qi animates, warms and nourishes the body. There are many different factors that can disrupt the flow of Qi within our body. Stress, worry, fear, anxiety, environmental toxins, injury, drugs, alcohol and poor diet are just a few. Living in today's society makes it challenging for us to live simple lives. Acupuncture can help restore our bodies back to a homestatic state safe and naturally.

What Happens During My First Visit?
Your initial visit will consist of reviewing your health history as well as any concerns and/or goals you would like to achieve with acupuncture. After your consultation you will then receive treatment on a heated plush massage table. Disrobing is not necessary, so please wear comfortable clothing that can easily be rolled up above your elbows and knees. Once the needles are placed you are then encouraged to let your body relax - most people fall asleep!
After treatment most people feel much better than when they came in. The effects of your treatment may continue to improve 1 day to several days after. Allow a full 72 hours for your treatment to deliver its full potential. Every person is unique and requires a different course of treatment, we will discuss what is best for you. On average, it is recommended to receive 1-3 treatments a week. Please consider scheduling several treatments when you make your initial appointment, as the schedule is usually booked at least two weeks out. This will avoid any wait time in between treatments, allowing you to get the most benefit from your treatments. Chronic conditions generally require more than acute.
